There is such a thing these days as a program that allows you to create your dwelling's layout and it is called the Floorplanner. For those who need to visualize things perfectly before making a move and for others who don't enjoy sketching, this might be the tool you were looking for. If you are thinking of having a house built, this could probably save you a lot of trouble and allow you to have a clearer idea on what it is you want before even consulting a contractor (or buying a new modular couch). You can virtually create and layout every piece of furniture you own, down to the tea kettle! It allows you to be creative and maximize the architectural elements of your dwelling. Surely a well spent hour on your computer! This program is free to use.
